Future Book Suggestions

Do you have a favorite book that you think OneBook CRC ought to read in the future? If so, identify the book's title and author, and give a brief explanation about what makes it a good book.

  1. 'Captive' by Timothy Allen Smith is a great book for OneBook CRC. It is the story of 9 strangers held hostage in a room together and through these 9 characters, the writer addresses issues of diversity and cultural sensitivity in a post 9/11 world. It really is an amazing book that will stimulate conversation and cause readers to think about relevant issues in a unique way

  2. Proust Was A Neuroscientist by Jonah Lehrer. Amazing book, Lehrer writes grippingly on a wide range of subjects. From the Forward: Proust Was a Neuroscientist

"Science is not the only path to knowledge. In fact, where the brain is concerned, art got there first. Artists – painters, poets, chefs, composers, and novelists – as well as scientists discover essential truths about the human mind.

We learn how Proust first revealed the fallibility of memory; how George Eliot discovered brain plasticity; how the French chef Escoffier discovered umami (the fifth taste); how Cezanne worked out the subtleties of vision; and how Gertrude Stein exposed the deep structure of language – a full half-century before Chomsky."

  3. "Nutrition & Physical Degeneration" by Weston A. Price, D.D.S.. Epic study from the 'Father of Nutrition' who traveled around the globe and studied hundreds of indigenous cultures who were in perfect health even though they ate completely different diets. They had practically no tooth decay and were immune TB which was ravaging modern society at the time. This book should be required reading for every high school student in America.

  4. The Distance Between Us, a memoir by Reyna Grande, about her experiences growing up in Mexico and immigrating to the U.S., California, being undocumented. It was a National Book Critics Circle Awards Nominee. I believe that the author currently lives in the Sacramento area.
